17 Questions To Ask Yourself To Find Clarity in Your Nursing Career
Feeling burnt out and stuck in your nursing career? Oi, after investing $30k (or more!) into nursing school, it’s beyond frustrating to question whether you’re in the right field. 😭
When I chose nursing straight out of high school, I didn’t give much thought to what I really wanted in a career. I was young, unsure of myself, and felt this overwhelming pressure to make a lifelong decision about my future right now.
I became a nurse, started my first job, and quickly developed a maybe-this-career-isn’t-for-me mindset. I honestly felt so lost — like I had no real purpose (even in the stability of a steady nursing career). Over time, that mindset snowballed into stress, overwhelm, and eventually, burnout.
So what do you do when you’re in that mindset? When you’re feeling drained, dissatisfied, or just plain stuck, how do you find clarity in your nursing career and figure out what’s next?
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. We’re complex people with unique passions and goals, and it takes intentional effort to uncover what lights you up. But taking a little time to reflect, explore, and get to know yourself better can lead to huge breakthroughs.
Don’t worry about having all the answers right away because this process is more about getting curious — about who you are, what inspires you, and what kind of life you want to build. By diving into these 17 questions, you’ll uncover insights that can help you find clarity, reignite your passion, and create a nursing career (or pivot!) that truly aligns with you.

You Can Do Hard Things
Maybe your nursing career doesn’t look like what you imagined when you started, and that’s okay. Feeling directionless or burnt out doesn’t mean you’re stuck — it means you’re ready for something new.
There’s no doubt finding clarity in your nursing career will be life-changing, but the path to clarity will require some serious work. The idea of “moving forward” sounds easy enough, but when you’re in the midst of feeling stuck, unfulfilled, and directionless, moving forward feels burdensome and out of reach.
But when moving forward feels impossible, start small. Shift your focus inward and commit to doing the real work of self-discovery. Sit with those feelings, reflect on what inspires you, and ask yourself how you can shift your mindset or circumstances to find fulfillment and create the life you’ve always dreamed of. You’re not fixing everything overnight — you’re building the foundation for meaningful change.
Trust me, you can do hard things — I know this because you already do hard things every day, and it’s never stopped you before.
